Go Green

Put down the soda and skip that ridiculous $5.00 latte loaded with calories and sugar. And for the love of all things good, DO NOT DRINK THAT ENERGY DRINK.

If you really need a boost of caffeine, go green—green tea, that is. This ancient beverage is commonly hailed as the perfect healthy concoction to replace the typical energy boosters, and for good reason.

On top of being the perfect pick-me-up for early mornings and late nights, green tea has numerous health benefits. For starters, most green teas don’t have any calories, and because they aren’t heavily processed, the antioxidants found in the leaves help your body fight and kill bad cells that cause cancer, blood clots, and other undesirable health conditions.

Additionally, the polyphenol found in green tea increases the rate at which your body turns food into calories, thusly increasing metabolism and weight loss. Another little known benefit lies in the leaves, whose antioxidants can also help reduce sunburn when applied to the skin.

If you don’t mind sacrificing a few calories for more flavors (because honestly, green tea doesn’t taste all that great on its own), many tea companies offer a variety of flavored green tea options. Lipton, available at most grocers, carries varieties like purple acai berries with blueberry, white mangosteen with peach, honey, and lemon, and many other flavors. And if you have a sweet tooth, Starbucks offers a grande shaken iced green tea with lemonade with only 130 calories.

Going healthy can be a difficult challenge, but substituting your regular sugar loaded drinks for green tea is a great way to kick start the journey towards a healthier lifestyle.
