Journalism Sweeps District

Journalism Sweeps District

Hannah Webb, Editor-in-Chief

The District UIL Academics competition was held at Keller High School on March 24. The UIL Academics competitions have a variety of events, ranging from science, math, English, and even computer-based contests. Competitors have been training since the beginning of the year at the various invitational meets held in anticipation for the district meet.

Your very own journalism kids and Wigwam staff members were among the competitors from KHS training to succeed in the district competition and hopefully make it to the regional competition.

KHS Journalism had eight kids participating in the journalism events:

  • Kate Carlin: headline writing, news writing, copy editing
  • Cindy Ciotta: feature writing
  • Gwen Morovitz: news writing
  • Emily Semlow: feature writing, editorial writing, copy editing
  • Abby Tow: headline writing, copy editing
  • Hannah Webb: editorial writing, copy editing
  • Thomas Winzeler: feature writing, news writing
  • Meleah York: editorial writing, headline writing

Sure enough, all the hard work paid off. KHS Journalism is heading to the regional competition in three events: headline writing, editorial writing, and news writing.

Kate Carlin placed first in news writing and second in headline writing, Hannah Webb placed first in editorial writing, and Meleah York placed third in editorial writing.

The regional competition will take place on April 14 at the University of Texas at Arlington. Send good vibes to your favorite journalism team between now and then; we hope to represent Keller High School at the State competition!
