Cross Country Districts

Keller varsity and junior varsity girls and boys competed in the District 5-6A event at Bob Jones Park on Thursday, Oct 17.

The cross country season began weeks before the school year as the athletes prepared early in the morning. After training and building up muscle memory, the varsity and junior varsity teams started off the year with a great few races in South Lakes Park in Denton and Bob Jones Park in Southlake.

With strong coaching from Coach Zaring, Coach Garnett, and Coach Jewell through practices and meets, the team prepared heavily for their big districts meet this Thursday.

With a cold temperature of 55 degrees, the first race began at 7 am for the varsity girls. Southlake Carroll put up a tough competition, yet Vera Thompson held one of the top places all throughout the 5K race.

The grass along the course was wet, the ground muddy, making it harder for the runners to gain traction. Even through the somewhat challenging conditions of the race, varsity girls took second place overall in district and are bound for the regional meet. Varsity boys took fifth place overall, after a strong and dedicated bunch of runners kept higher placings than most of the other school athletes.

The athletes are now back to work on their times and their technique as they prepare for the regional meet. Keller cross country has had athletes go to nationals in the recent past, and the coaches alongside their strong-willed athletes hope to continue this tradition. But for now, their sights are set on preparation for the regional competition.
