Alternative music had a victorious year in 2018. Mitski’s groundbreaking alt-pop masterpiece of an album, Be The Cowboy, Snail Mail’s jagged but heartfelt rock album, Lush, and Lucy Dacus’s soft-spoken, hard-hitting album, Historian, among others, ended up as three of my favorites. But 2019 has already been packed with some truly amazing music.

Sharon Van Etten’s Remind Me Tomorrow was released in mid-January and was well received among critics. The ten-track collection of songs leaves some of Etten’s traditional acoustic singer-songwriter sound in the past, but adds a pop twist that was as unexpected for fans as it was wonderful to listen to. The lyrics hold true to raw simplicity of her very first albums, but relish in a new catchy feel that makes for great road trip music.

Left At London, a poet and singer based out of Seattle, released Transgender Street Legend, Vol. 1, in 2018, but the music video for the singer’s iconic song “Revolution Lover” premiered in March of 2019. The video is precious and sweet, a love-filled frolic that makes you want to hug somebody you care about. This song has quickly become a personal favorite and has found a place in my heart in 2019. It will definitely remain on my rotation for years to come.

WHEN WE FALL ASLEEP WHERE DO WE GO?, the highly anticipated alternative pop album from Billie Eilish, dropped in 2019 following her EP from 2017. The 17-year-old singer created an album as delicate as it is haunting. The initial single release of the song “Bury a Friend” sparked widespread interest in not only the singer, but her new album as well.

2019 is nearly a fourth of the way over, but the albums set to release in the upcoming months come by the dozens. Vampire Weekend, Beirut, Weezer, and American Football are all set to drop new projects this year, all of which I am anxiously awaiting.
