Looking back at the 2010s, it was a decade that will certainly leave its mark on history. From the increase in globalization and pop culture, the improvement of technology, and both the beginning and enhancements of new movements, these have defined the progressive nature of the world over the last ten years.
The major testament to the last decade has been the development in technology. Almost everyone in the world has been affected in some way by new devices and gadgets. Smartphones with face recognition, curved televisions, virtual reality, the craziest things people couldn’t have imagined decades ago have become our reality. An even crazier thought, imagining what technology will look like in another ten years.
Pop culture has seen a spiked increase due to the globalization of apps and the continued rise of social media. A big part of the 2010s was the hottest new trends and apps that came out. Even though it seems like Instagram has been around forever, it was only at the beginning of the decade that is was created, in October of 2010. Beyond just Instagram, Snapchat, Vine, and, more recently Tik Tok, have taken the world by storm. In particular they have taken hold of the youth, all over the world.
The 2010s have seen a tremendous increase in movements for racial, gender, and religious minorities. This decade will be remembered as the decade where polarizing figures made steps towards securing equality for all. Names such as Malala, Colin Kaepernick, and Megan Rapinoe are names that come to mind of people not just in America, but around the world have an impact.
The 2010s will also be remembered as the decade that saw the increased involvement of youth against the issues our world faces today. Take Greta Thunberg, the 16 year old Swedish girl committed to fighting climate change. The last decade saw the next generation, the future of our world step up and make plans to better change our future.
2019 doesn’t just mark the end of another year, it marks the end of another decade. Over the last ten years, our world has progressed and changed so much, mostly for the better. As a people, as a community, as a society, as a nation, as a world, I think the 2010s will be remembered as a decade with so many beautiful moments that brought the world together. Whether it be through natural disaster, war, or sports the last decade should be remembered as ten years where people around the world recognized our similarities. Our potential is limitless. If you just look at all the progress we’ve made during the 2010’s, one can only imagine the heights we can take ourselves to in the 2020s.
