Throughout our lives, and currently, we have listened to a variety of music artists that we didn’t even know were apart of other popular groups, or even had other side projects.

Here are just a few to name that you may or may not have known about.

Blur

The well-known 90’s British rock band Blur’s frontman Damon Albarn is the one who partnered with comic artist Jamie Hewlett to create the indie rock/electronic group Gorillaz, consisting of virtual characters.

The Shins

The Shins vocalist, James Mercer, has an electronic music side project called Broken Bells, a duo with the producer Danger Mouse.

Pearl Jam and Soundgarden

Alternative rock band members Chris Cornell from Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder came together in Seattle in 1990 to create the grunge band Temple of the Dog.

Guns n’ Roses and Stone Temple Pilots

Members from American rock bands Guns n’ Roses and Stone Temple Pilots, including guitarist Slash and vocalist Scott Weiland, formed the side project band Velvet Revolver in 2002, with their debut album Contraband in 2004. However, Scott Weiland parted ways in 2008 to rejoin Stone Temple Pilots.

Zooey Deschanel

Many don’t know that actress Zooey Deschanel has a music side project called She & Him, an American indie duo with M. Ward, consisting of a mix of songs they wrote, as well as song covers from the 60s/70s.

Atlas Sound/Deerhunter

Musician and actor Bradford Cox, who co-starred Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner in the movie Dallas Buyers Club, is the solo member of avant-pop project Atlas Sound, as well as the vocalist and lead guitarist for the indie rock band Deerhunter.

Mac Demarco

Former member of Mac Demarco’s singer-songwriter indie live band, Peter Sagar, playing the guitar, keyboard, and backup vocals, left in 2014 to take on the Montreal-based HOMESHAKE project. Personally, my favorite side project out of this entire list, the eccentric variety of sounds HOMESHAKE creates appeals to me in a mix of alternative R&B, soul, lo-fi, indie-pop, serving “I recorded this in my basement” vibes.

The White Stripes

Not only is Jack White in American rock band The White Stripes with Meg White, but also created The Raconteurs with Brendan Benson, and The Dead Weather with Alison Mosshart. For a random fact, Jack White and Meg White were actually married 1996 to 2000, divorced, then began referring to themselves as siblings at the peak of the bands fame.

These are just a few out of many side projects to name, intentionally including a genre variety, and now it’s time for you to check them out.
