On Thursday, September 29, every One Direction fan got the notification on their phone that Niall Horan has released his own song. Ever since the band announced their hiatus last year, people have been skeptical about members of the band going the separate ways with their own projects and ideas. Some of us, however, were hopeful that One Direction would rise again out of their year long break. But now, with the release of song by Horan, there could be a chance of more solo work in the future, and maybe an end to One Direction.

Anyone that knows me personally knows that I have loved One Direction since the eighth grade, and still love them today. And when my favorite member of the band dropped a single that Thursday morning, I had to hold in my excitement all the way through AP Government. At first, I had no idea what to think of the song. One Direction can sometimes release cheesy love songs that are alright, but they can probably release and write better songs that aren’t so pop and cheesy.

When I first heard the song, though, Horan’s voice instantly reminded me of the band Passenger, who are well-known for their song “Let Her Go”. “This Town” is very calm and almost folk-like, similar to The Lumineers and Passenger. The song definitely isn’t as cheesy as some One Direction songs were, but the song is so calming and cute. And honestly, it’s just very weird hearing Horan sing by himself throughout the whole song. You keep expecting the rest of One Direction to jump in and sing with him, before you remember that Horan is now a solo artist.

Even if you aren’t a One Direction fan, I still strongly recommend listening to “This Town”. Horan’s new song isn’t too pop, and adds in similar sounds that would you find in The Lumineers, James Bay, and more. If you’re interested in checking out the song, it’s now available on iTunes and Spotify. Enjoy!
