Lazer Team

On September 24, one of the most uniquely created films premiered in Austin, Texas. Funded by fans through an Indiegogo campaign, Rooster Teeth’s first major motion picture, Lazer Team debuted at the Fantastic Fest. Lazer Team is a sci-fi film directed by Matt Hullum starring Burnie Burns, Colton Dunn, Gavin Free and Michael Jones.

Rooster Teeth Productions, LLC. is an Austin based entertainment company founded April 1, 2003 by Burnie Burns, Geoff Ramsey, Gus Sorola, Joel Heyman and Matt Hullum by releasing their machinima series “Red vs. Blue”. Red vs. Blue is a comedy series based off of Halo and has just recently finished its 13th season. The company has gained most of its attention from the series, but also receives lots of praise from their other divisions and shows such as RWBY, Achievement Hunter, The RT Podcast, X-Ray and Vav, and even their own convention, RTX. Although this film is a huge deal for the company, it’s just one of the many projects that Rooster Teeth has created.

Originally announced at Pax Prime in 2011, the campaign to fund Lazer Team did not launch until June 2014, aiming for only $650,000. They hit this goal in under 10 hours, broke 1 million within three days and had raised an amazing $2.4 million by the deadline. Rooster Teeth employees Josh Flanagan, Chris Demarais, director Matt Hullum and the movie’s own star Burnie Burns wrote the script over a span of 3 years, even completely rewriting the third act a week before filming started. Filming began in October 2014, stealing away Gavin and Michael away from Achievement Hunter (which fans weren’t very happy about, but it was for something they were even more excited for) for the 2 months it took to film the whole movie. The first teaser trailer premiered February 20, shortly preceding the release of the first official trailer on March 16 at South by Southwest.

The plot of Lazer Team revolves around an extraterrestrial message that Earth received in the 1960’s saying that the universe is a dangerous place and we will be attacked at some point. The message was sent by friendly aliens who have protected Earth from enemies over the years, and in complete secrecy, Earth has been communicating with these new allies. The aliens create a extremely powerful suit for a special hero to wear and defend our planet and send it our way. Unfortunately, instead of reaching the hero, the suit ends up with 4 morons who have absolutely no idea what it is or what it can do.

Upon discovering the contraption, the 4 guys mess around with it and the suit it contains, just as anyone would do if they saw a glowing blue pod fall from the sky. Individual pieces of the suit end up getting stuck on them, and they can’t get it off. Hagan, a clumsy cop, has the left arm of the suit that allows him to create an energy shield. Zach, a school jock (who’s a bit cocky), wears the right arm that’s an energy cannon. Woody, the town idiot, has the helmet that provides him higher intelligence, x-ray vision and somehow a British accent. Herman, a drunk former football hero, is stuck with the boots that allow him to run at superhuman speeds.

Stuck with the suit now, this leaves the Earth’s safety in the hands of 4 clueless guys. The original “hero” must now train them how to use the suit properly to defend the planet in just a few days. The team aren’t exactly friends, but they try their hardest to bond and act like best friends throughout the film. After all, they’re all in the same situation. Trying find a way to change their lives from ordinary guys to possibly the most important human beings on the planet.

Lazer Team will be released in theaters in January 2016 and will simultaneously be released physically and digitally to the backers of the Indiegogo campaign. It’s a must-see movie, with its writers putting an endless amount of work into it, the funny storyline, true individual characters, and for the pure fact that Gavin Free is in it. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to see 4 grown men play with lasers?
