Clockwork Angel is the first installment of Cassandra Clare’s Infernal Devices trilogy, which itself is a prequel to her series The Mortal Instruments. The novel takes place in London c.1878 in a world of demon hunting Shadowhunters, vampires, werewolves, Fair Folk, and warlocks.

Sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray leaves New York to live with her brother Nate after their aunt passes away. When Tessa arrives, she is not greeted by her brother, but is kidnapped by the Dark sisters who reveal that she has an unusual gift that they plan on using for their own evil purposes. Will Herondale, a Shadowhunter, accidentally stumbles upon where the Dark sisters are keeping Tessa and saves her. Tessa finds herself taking refuge with the Shadowhunters and must use her newly discovered gift to save them and her brother from the Magister, who hired the Dark sisters to take Tessa and plans to destroy the Shadowhunters.

Clare writes a captivating story with plenty of twists and turns to keep readers on their toes. Readers can count on plenty of action and suspense in this urban fantasy story. This thrilling story woefully ends in a cliffhanger which will keep readers wanting more. Clockwork Prince and newly released Clockwork Princess follow this novel in Clare’s trilogy.
