“All persons imprisoned in any place of detention under United States jurisdiction must be paid the prevailing wage in their state or territory for their labor,” – the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee. Inmates all over America are begging to stand up and fight for their rights as U.S. citizens. Criminals may have become but humans they have always been. Activists describe prison labor as “modern-day slavery” and they’re not far from the truth. Not only are these people poorly compensated but they’re also treated quite badly and don’t get justice for it.

Inmates earn dimes from custodial to culinary work, varying from zero to two dollars an hour.  Angela Hanks, a criminal justice expert said, “Forced labor for low or no wages, we have a term for that, we call it slavery”. Many of these inmates are verbally and physically abused by guards and other inmates and are not given much justice other than being put in the psychiatric wing. This causes many more mental problems for the inmates because most of them do not belong there.

In the United States, about 1 in 3 black males are subject to imprisonment and are encouraged to plead guilty so they can go home at the price of being a convicted criminal. These young citizens are then followed by their criminal record when the only they did wrong was in the wrong place at the wrong time. On top of that bail is set extremely high and is always almost impossible to pay off by most of the inmates.

So ask yourself is this truly fair to anyone, does this system really bring justice to anyone like it’s suppose to. Team up with the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee and plan a strike near your local prison to truly bring justice to the people of America in a healthy and fair manner.
